A bit of Sunday Wisdom: Taking Time

A bit of wisdom from the Bible, from the sewing community, and a shoutout project! It has been over a year since I started this blog, so thank you to all my followers for sticking with me this far! A special thanks to my family for supporting this endeavor and Zachary for being my editor! I love you all and feel so blessed that I can write this blog freely.

Take some time in the Word… I have been really busy this past couple of weeks after starting school again! It seemed like every time I turned around, I had another commitment on the weekend, more time studying because school is getting harder, my dog needed more attention, the house needed cleaning, laundry needed to be done… and the list went on. I cannot imagine if I had kids! My poor sewing machine just watched from the corner sadly unused and rejected, but not my Bible. Some days are better than others and I am by no means perfect at spending daily time in the Word, but I know it’s important. It is our life manual, our instructions, and our comfort. This is not just any other book! It is the Word of God, Spirit breathed. There is not another book like it! Spending time in the Word is how we learn about who God is and what He has done for us. The Word of God is part of our armor, our sword, that protects us against the lies and evils of this world (Ephesians 6:10-18). Hebrews 4:12 describes it this way, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” If you think you don’t have time to read the Word of God, I implore you to take a serious look at your daily activities. Start with 5 minutes in the morning while you drink your cup of tea or coffee. Wake up a little earlier if need be! Listen to it on the way to and from work on a Bible app. Set some time before bed to read with your family. My day tends to be more productive, intentional, and brighter in every way when I start my day with some Jesus time. I could go on and on about how important reading scripture is, but instead, I challenge you (and myself!) to see how putting the Bible first changes your life. If you are already consistently reading your Bible, I pray that it has been fruitful, and I hope this just encourages you all the more to continue your study of the Word! “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4 and Deuteronomy 8:3)

Seek help from wise people… This wisdom can be applied to more than just quilting, but I thought it was appropriate with my shoutout project this week. If you have been following this blog for some time, you will know that my mom and I have been working on some UFOs (unfinished objects) that my Gramma left us to finish. I am happy to show off one of those projects that my mom has finished the top of! Shoutout to Robin Rice for this beautiful pastel Spinning Star quilt.

Gramma had almost all the blocks finished for this quilt; however, my mom needed to finish and make a few more blocks to have an even number. Looked simple enough… except of course we did not have a pattern. She called me asking how to do this block and I was baffled. I’ve been quilting for 16 years now, but there is still so many blocks and techniques I have never done and this was one! So we did what was necessary, we asked for help. I emailed some wise quilters I knew, and my mom sent a message on a quilters Facebook page asking if anyone could identify this block and how to do this technique. We got our answer very quickly!

This is a partial seam sewing method and the block was called a Spinning Star.

If you are interested in learning how to make this block, check out Blocks-A-Go-Go: Spinning Star quilt block tutorial. Although my mom and I had never seen this block, the quilting community was able to help us out and even sent us a helpful tutorial that was easy to follow. My mom would never have been able to finish this quilt if we had not reached out. The quilting community is one of the most charitable and loving communities that I have ever been a part of, and this simple story is just one example of how tight knit this group can be!

Reaching out for help is not only for quilting, but for anything in your life that you need. There is always someone with more experience and wisdom that will be willing to share their experiences. If you need help, seek it!

If you read my last blog, my dog was in a cone from some stitches in his ear. I am happy to say he has recovered and is enjoying the cone-free life again! God Bless and happy quilting!
