A Desert Quilt and A Difficult Question

“Then Pilate said to him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world – to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’ Pilate said to him, ‘What is truth?’ After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.” ~John 18:38 (ESV)

What is truth? Pilate asks this question to Jesus during His trial before His crucifixion. How Pilate asked Jesus this crucial question is up for debate, whether out of sincerity or jest, we don’t know for certain. However, we can ask the same question as Pilate, but unlike Him, stop and listen for the answer. So many people are searching for the truth. Is there no absolute truth? Is science the only truth? Is Jesus the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)? What is society’s definition of truth right now, and how can we as Christians be prepared to give an answer to this important question? If you are not a Christian reading this blog, I am glad you are here, and the question stands for you as well. What is truth and how do we defend it?

Today’s featured quilt is called Delightful Desert by Elizabeth Hartman. I’ve used her dinosaur pattern before on another baby quilt I made. I finished this quilt for a friend of mine who is originally from New Mexico, so you will see some tributes to their background. We were looking to pull the beautiful colors of the desert into this quilt to remind them and their baby of home.

I deviated from the pattern by designing my own cacti block. I believe changing the design a little made this quilt more personalized for the family. Designing and executing my own block was challenging but also enjoyable and well worth the effort. Maybe if I get around to writing down the instructions, I will share how to make this cacti block. Let me know if you are interested! The more interest, the more motivation I’ll have to figure out how I made this block over a year ago 🙂

I definitely fall under the patterns are loose guidelines. I would love to hear from you!

The free motion on this quilt was a lot of fun to do! I wanted to bring in the plants of the desert in a whimsical way. I used a blue, yellow, and green variegated thread in hopes that it would stand out from the background but not distract completely from the beautiful animals. I started out by drawing straight lines across the fabric as a guide for each row of cacti. I varied the spacing between each row so some rows of cacti are larger than others. I started in the middle of each row and worked out to the edge to avoid the dreaded puckering. This way was slightly more time consuming, but ultimately worth it in the end!

I was still working on learning how to free motion with my new machine when I made this quilt. Whether you can quilt quickly or slowly (like me), the time and love into each stitch is what matters the most! If you don’t quilt your own quilts because you are nervous, “not artistic enough*,” or never tried, I encourage you to give it a chance!
*This is in quotes because I have heard this answer before and I believe everyone is artistic enough, it just may take more practice and learning!

The question of what is truth has been on my mind and heart lately as our society is riddled with anger and resentment towards each other over differences in what each of us believes is the truth. I feel called to dive deep into this topic to see what Scripture says about truth and how it applies to us today. I hope you will join me! Happy Quilting!

“Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!” ~Psalm 43:3
