In Memory: Bonnie Eileen Ruecker

Today, a year ago, marks the passing of this precious quilter, grandmother, wife, mom, and friend. Some of you reading this will not have met her, and I truly wish you had. I started this blog not long after her death to keep alive her love of quilting, and so I think it only fitting to have a post attributed to her today. After a 9 year battle with Amyloidosis, our Father in heaven called her home for eternity to be without pain. It is sad to think about those we have lost and how we wish they could be with us today. It almost seems unfair and it is easy for us to ask, why God? But as a believer in Christ, I know that death is not the end for those who believe in Him. I am comforted to know that He is in control, and that one day, there will be no more death. “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” ~Revelations 21:4

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” ~ John 3:16

Gramma was a Registered Nurse, who worked at St. Mary’s Hospital and part-time in Grandpa’s medical office. She was a member and past president of the Decatur Quilt Guild.  She was also a member of the American Quilt Society.  She enjoyed bowling and racquetball, was an active golfer, and member of Southside Country Club.  She was also a member of Eagle Creek Golf and Country Club, Naples, FL where we spent many vacations.  She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Project Linus, PEO-CX Chapter, member of DMH Auxiliary, where she was general chairman of the Fun Fair, and a member of Junior Welfare.  Gramma was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and a choir member. She had the most beautiful voice, and we always loved to hear her sing and play the piano for us as kids.

Most importantly,

Gramma was my mentor, my teacher, and my friend. She introduced me to quilting at the young age of 8 or 9. This picture is of the first project we made together. It was a body pillow made of three simple blocks. This simple beginning started a shared passion that I continue on in her memory today. Gramma always had the utmost patience with me. She taught herself how to quilt and passed the knowledge onto me. She encouraged me to try new things like free motion quilting and was always willing to try a quilt pattern I had designed myself… to the dismay that we would have to do lots of math. We spent many summers together on shop hops and working on 4-H projects into the middle of the night to finish before fair. I will never forget the seeming unlimited love she had for me and my siblings nor this hobby she dedicated so much of her time too. I love you so much Gramma. I know you are smiling down on us today.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever. ~Psalm 23

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?'” ~ John 11:25-25

  1. Thanks for your post, Hunter. Your grandma was a special friend to me and I think of her often. Today brings some sadness, but such good memories of time spent together. ❤️

  2. What wonderful memories! She was such a loving and caring person! She is a favorite angel above I am sure! I remember one night in our room in Paducah when we were trying to figure out a beading kit we had both purchased, how hard we laughed and how frustrated we were with it! It was so late at night, but neither one of us would quit until we got it done! We had such good times together!
