Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mom’s out there! I have a quick and easy mother’s day gift. A Mug Rug! If you have never heard of a Mug Rug, it’s a rug for your mug!! Really it is a quilted coaster. I made it for my mother and mother-in-law this year. Unfortunately, it is still in the mail, so happy late Mother’s day to the best Grandma and Nana in our lives! I’ll have to tell them not to read this post until they get their gift… I was able to finish this project in a few hours, including drying time. I hope you find it inspiring and I look forward to seeing your amazing Mug Rugs!

These are the supplies you will need to make your mug rug, along with your sewing machine of course! Your scrap fabric needs to be at least 6x9in. These directions are to make two mug rugs. Final dimensions of this mug rug is 6.5” x 4.75”.
- Cut two pieces of your “sky” fabric 4.5”x5.25” and two pieces of your “grass” fabric 3”x5.25”. I started off with much larger pieces, because I wanted to gage the room I would need for my daughters hand print. If you do the same thing, you will cut down to 5.25”x7” later (step 4).
- Sew your sky and your grass pieces together and press open.

3. Set up your work space. I used tape to ensure the fabric wouldn’t move while we were doing the handprint. See video below on how we did a handprint with a 9 month old!
4. If you started off with larger piece of fabric, once the paint has dried, trim down to 5.25”x7”. Lay your top piece on top of a scrap of batting.
5. If you would like to do any quilting or machine applique at this point, do that now before putting the back on. I ended up hand quilting around the handprint later.
6. Out of your back fabric, cut one piece 3.5”x5.25” (a) and the other piece 4.5×5.25” (b).
7. With the (b) piece, take the edge that will be on the outside and fold over twice about a 1/4” each time. (As seen in this picture)

8. Place the (b) piece of fabric right sides together with your top piece. Then place (a) piece on top, pin down as necessary. Ensure the raw edged piece is on top and that it overlaps with the piece underneath.
9. Sew together all the way around and trim off any excess batting.
10. Flip inside out, ensuring the corners are fully pushed out (a knitting needle or a even a chop stick works well for this).

11. I decided to hand quilt around the handprint at this point and give the bumble bees some motion.
12. Once flipped, I used fabric glue to close up the opening. You can also choose to whip stitch it shut if you have more time.

13. Add any additional details you desire using the fabric paint or the fabric marker. A personal message on the back is also a nice touch!
Let me know if you make this mug rug and how it turned out! Please share your pictures in the comment sections or on social media. If you have any questions about these instructions, please reach out so I can explain in more detail.
